Elderberry Syrup

How do you make elderberry syrup?

Elderberry syrup can be made with fresh or dried elderberries (remove all the stems as much as possible a couple are not a big deal if they are teeny, the heat will cook off anything that is toxic), you can forge them locally if they are in your area, make sure to study on the description and feel confident, there are copycat poisonous trees/shrubs.  If your uncomfortable with your own judgment its safer to just order online.

“Never eat RAW or uncooked Elderberries”

To make the syrup:

  1. Combine 2 cups of dried (here) or fresh elderberries with 4 cups of cold distilled water in a heavy saucepan.
  2. Bring the water to a boil, reduce heat, and cook uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring regularly.
  3. Remove from the heat and let steep for 1 hour. Strain mixture into a large measuring cup covered with cheesecloth, reserving liquid and discarding the used berries.
  4. Allow the syrup to cool, then stir in 1 cup of raw honey which you can buy here  its best if you can buy your honey local. (do not stir it in when its hot wait til its luke warm, you want the benefits of the raw honey). Pour mixture into a sterilized container.
  5. Seal and store in the refrigerator for up to three months.
  6. There is no standard dose for elderberry syrup.  We usually take 1 tsp daily around flu season, if I see that immunity is low I may up that to 2 tsp. once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Again research this yourself so your comfortable for you and your family, or ask your medical practitioner.
