EAT TO HEAL YOUR THYROID

"Healing Your Thyroid Naturally"

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck that makes hormones that regulate energy, metabolism, mood, heart rate and other important functions. When it’s out of whack, symptoms can include weight gain, fatigue, dry skin and hair, sluggish thinking and depression etc.

Clean eating is essential when healing your thyroid

If you’re feeling low on energy or a little blue, your thyroid could be to blame. Below I’ve listed some clean foods and supplements I use and have had success with healing my thyroid.

Low Glycemic Foods -. The purpose of a glycemic index (GI) diet is to eat carbohydrate-containing foods that are less likely to cause large increases in blood sugar levels. Trim Healthy Mama is perfect for keeping your blood sugar stable!

Legumes – The purpose: high in fiber/vitamins

Legumes are high in fiber, which can help prevent or reduce constipation – a common complaint in people with Hashimotos.

Bonus: legumes are also high in zinc which is critical for thyroid function.

Brazil nuts -The purpose: selenium

Brazil nuts are a rich source of selenium. The thyroid has the highest selenium content of any organ, and studies suggest that selenium deficiencies may be a primary cause of thyroid disorders.

Seeds– The purpose: vitamins/fats

crucial for your immune system so many vitamins needed in seeds to help thyroid function (including zinc, selenium, copper, iron, vitamin B6, and vitamin E) “check out this post on seed cycling to balance your hormones naturally”.

Fats– The Purpose: Fats are essential in providing the body with energy.  Every single cell in your body has a membrane that protects it from damage.  Those membranes are made of proteins, fat, and cholesterol. Fats are crucial for proper absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E & K.

Today it is easy to avoid the industrial seed oils prevalent in our modern diet, but the one mistake I see a lot of people make is cooking with olive oil.

“You should always be cooking with a saturated fat. “

My favorite is coconut oil, you can get it almost anywhere and its relatively budget friendly. Coconut oil can be used in so many things cooking, smoothies, your skin, oil pulling. Make sure to get quality oils, it is extremely important when you are looking at sourcing healthy fats for your pantry that you get fat from animals that have been raised organically and that are grass-fed or pastured. If you are buying tropical oils like coconut or palm, make sure to buy organic. For olive and avocado oils, make sure to purchase from a reputable company that cold-presses and stores their product in dark containers like this one to avoid the monounsaturated fats being easily oxidized by heat and light.

Healthy sources of Protein:

Beef – B-Vitamins promote various functions of the body. Beef contains B-12, which promotes a healthy nervous system, B-6 for a healthy immune system, niacin which aids our bodies digestive system, and riboflavin which promote healthy skin and eyes. It’s also another source of Zinc.

Chicken–   Chicken has a good dose of both tryptophan and vitamin B5 both help reduce stress. It also is full of magnesium, which relieves PMS symptoms. Keeping stress levels low are so important when healing your thyroid.

Turkey– very rich source of protein, niacin, vitamin B6 and the amino acid tryptothan, which produces serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps improve your mood. Apart from these nutrients, it also contains zinc and vitamin B12

Wild Caught Tuna, Wild Caught Salmon fresh and in can

When possible (use all the bones and skin, when making salmon burgers.)

Whole eggs – are rich sources of selenium, vitamin D, B6, B12 and minerals such as zinc, iron and copper. Egg yolks contain more calories and fat than the whites. They are a source of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K
